It's not intense, really. And yes, the hot rice cooks the egg a little. You should try natto! With a Samascott egg! You can get natto at a well-stocked Asian grocery market.

Now, this (http://www.justhungry.com/slimy-slimy-goodness-all-together-bowl), is intense. My roommate also taught me to eat rice topped with sliced raw okra and soy sauce. It's pretty good too. But I've never seen her combine okra, natto and raw egg.

And yes, she brought fresh eggs from Japan to the US.

That breakfast sounds intense! I've never had natto. Doesn't the rice cook the egg a bit?

Here is a picture from Wikipedia showing "The Natto of Today" - my kind of caption: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Natto_boxed.jpg
Looks more like the natto of tomorrow. They should serve it at ToyQube.

Finally, your roommate brought fresh eggs back from Japan? To the US?

Awesome title.

I don't blame the coyotes, hawks, owls and the pug. Chickens are delicious! And I imagine especially the residents of Mr Samascott's farm. V. informative piece!

One of the things I used to love to eat is raw mixed in with a hot bowl of white rice and natto, with splashes of soy sauce. I've stopped because of the salmonella thing and I don't have access to fresh eggs. This method of eating (for breakfast) was introduced by my roommate in College who was Japanese. When she went back to Japan for holiday breaks, she'll bring back eggs. I guess there's salmonella isn't an issue there.

"The I Chang". Come ON, New York Magazine headline writers! I know they are playing on the, um, healthy self-belief of Mr. Chang and the word "I Ching" but that's still a lazy and bad pun. How about "Chang You Can Believe In"? A Chang of Noods. Okay, that's a bad one.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I had a similar "omg am I made of pavement?" feeling, talking to Ron.

I think only a small fraction of the eggs labeled "free range" are actually given this much freedom. Did you read The Omnivore's Dilemma? Ron's mobile coop is similar to what's described at Polyface Farm, and very different from what's described in the Whole Foods supplier's barn.
